I consider TeX and LaTeX, a potentially extremely useful technology for
the blind, because it can allow wonderful formatting even for someone
who is blind. LYX, or the idea of accessing the power of LaTeX without
having to learn all the tags, is especially promising for the blind,
since just like with those who can see, the majority of the blind are
not technically inclined and would rather enjoy the benefits of Latex
without learning all its complexities.

Actually, I believe that a dedicated LaTeX editor (TeXworks, TeXmaker, ...)
is better suited for generating of LaTeX documents for blind people.

LyX heavily relies on visual feedback and for this introduces an additional
layer (and own file format) that only complicates matters if you are after
a latex editor for blind people.

I have to admit that I don't know the other editors for LaTeX. However, I think that the use case for people who don't want to edit any LaTeX code still stands.

Perhaps a simplified user interface would do the job in this case, allowing users to write at least simple document more easily than with a LaTeX source code editor.

Such a project would have to be seen in the long term. I realistic GSoC goal would be to make the key features (paragraph setting, text editing) accessible to screen readers. The rest would be future work.

Btw (to Fernando), LyX uses Qt, but it uses a custom widget to draw the text, which is probably why it is not supported by screen readers.
