In particular, see this long thread, where several technical issues are addressed: http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.editors.lyx.devel/145717 You may want to get familiar with the issues discussed in the thread (in particular, note that LyX is not a full Qt application) and use that knowledge to write a detailed proposal. For instance, point 2 above could explain which parts of Lyx code you are going to modify, and point 4 should indicate a tangible goal you set for you midterm review. In general, tried to be as detailed as possible. Sometimes proposals list the tasks on a day by day basis. Even if don't go to such extremes, try to detail your activity on a weekly basis, listing which tasks you will tackle and which goals you expect to achieve by the end of the week.
