I think we have here the same case as with \baselineskip. LaTeX allows
all placement options. They might not be sensible but if the user wants
to use them we should not forbid them like we do not forbid
\baselineskip as horizontal length.
No, it is not the same thing.
One can use \baselineskip as a base for the width of a box. This in
general wrong, but it may be useful in some cases (make a square for
example).
Now, checking 'top' for a rotated caption will not nothing (you read the
rotating package documentation, didn't you?). It is like if I proposed
to add a "engrave the caption in golden letters" option. Users would be
free to use it ;)
I rethought the patch and think a fileformat is necessary. Attached is
an updated patch where I for now disabled the top and bottom placement
ans you proposed.
Thanks for that. I think that the page checkbox should be set and
disabled when sideways is checked.
