An update in case someone stumbles on this thread in the future. As a news service, 'gmane' is still around. It's the web interface that's not working. I use it with the slrn news reader: slrn -n -h news.gmane.org Separately I accidentally found that the news interface also works through 'news.gwene.org', e.g. as: nntp+news.gwene.org:gmane.editors.lyx.devel /Christian
