Actually I can reproduce without copying in what I think is an
equivalent and easier way:

1. Start with a fresh user profile.

2. cd lib/examples && lyx tufte-handout.lyx

3. In Document Settings, change to "Natbib (BibTeX)" (leave as
Author-Year). Press OK.

Notice that the first citation in the LyX display is "Bringhurst (2005)".

4. In Document Settings, change to "Biblatex", or "Biblatex (Natbib
mode)". Press OK.

Notice that the first citation in the LyX display is "Bringhurst 2005".
