I don't have the packaged TL installed. Instead I have TL2013/2015/2016/2017
and 2018
installed in parallel. The PATH contains an entry
'/usr/local/texlive/current/bin/x86_64-linux'.
The 'current' in that entry is a symbolic link to one of the installed TL, so
that a switch between them is easy
and does not require to change the PATH variable.
$ ls -l '/usr/local/texlive'
