strongly discourages such jumps. Then again, it also strongly
discourages upgrading instead of doing a fresh install.

I'm not much more experienced. Is there anyone among us who is?

I would suspect that we could easily enough get a second virtual machine
to test. I think they are fairly cheap. Another option would be to have
them take a snapshot of our VM just before we shut it down to do the
update. Then if it fails, we can have them restore it. Of course, that's
assuming they're not overwhelmed with other work right now....
