It will depend upon what kinds of processes are needed for maths,
etc.
In that document, some of them probably have to be exported as
images,
because the LaTeX is complicated. So yes, that's expected.
To be more precise, LyX tries to convert as many formulae as possible
into MathML. If it cannot (mostly due to ERT -- or their math
equivalent, when you can see the \command in red), it reverts to an
image (lyxpreviewXXX.png). I believe that only ERTs trigger this
behaviour.
I think you also get it with things like xymatrix and Feynmann, but
you've done a lot more work on that, so maybe that's changed.
