Unload the macports python and install the XCode Command line tools which has Python 3.9.6 in /usr/bin/python3.
If that works, perhaps even unload Macports and install Homebrew. If you have many packages installed, make a list. I use Homebrew including basictex (plus some addtional stuff) and copied 2.4 RC1 over the 2.3.7 provided from Homebrew.
