Question: under Tools > Preferences Paths I see slots for the
path to Document templates and the path to Example files.

No.
Should a user directory look like the attached userdir.png? Or are there
folders missing? Quite possibly in passing from 2.3 to 2.4 through all
the 2.4 alphas & betas I have messed things up.
If I copy the Tabletemplates folder to my user directory, the table is
produced and there is no crash.
