The entry of the external file in a LyX file is something like
\begin_inset External
template Draw.io
filename /path/testFile.drawio
\end_inset
so my understanding is that it doesn’t require a format change. The part
“template XXXX” specifies which external template in lib/xtemplates directory
should be used.
