That can be done, in particular the suffix part can be used directly from lyx.

Yes, exactly. What I would find useful is a commande like "lyx --update 
myfile.lyx", that would update the file in place (with the usual backup copy in the 
old format). Now I understand that I could invoke lyx2lyx for that, but it took some time 
before I found that.
