One way to catch problems is to loop through our extensive collection of .lyx files (manuals, examples, and even the bug-report .lyx files stored for the tests), convert them to 2.5.x format, then export to PDF with 2.5.x binary and export to PDF with 2.4.x binary, and then use diffpdf to look at the differences of the PDF files.
