The devs have been thinking about removing the class, but they couldn't do it due to bugs in GCC 9 and 10, apparently: https://bugreports.qt.io/ browse/QTBUG-117850 <https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-117850>. They are preparing the code base for its removal, it seems: https:// codereview.qt-project.org/c/qt/qtbase/+/192881 <https://codereview.qt- project.org/c/qt/qtbase/+/192881>.

From what I see, the issue is with i686 (32 bits) compiler mingw-w64. Enrico, is this thing relevant these days?

I don't think so. Windows 11 is 64 bit only and support for 32 bit cygwin has been dropped long ago.

In particular, can a newer fixed compiler be used for the old targets with a 32 bits architecture ?

Possibly, but I don't think we should cater for 32 bits architectures anymore.
