Perhaps GUIM -- GUI Modularization would seem more appropriate to you?
Trouble is that we then need to talk about system modularization when we
start supported multiple non-Unix platforms such as Windows, BeOS,
WhateverOS.
The independence is both internal and external -- core independent from
frontend and application independent from toolkit.

You just wanted to encourage me to finish researching and writing the
"History of GUII" series that Asger has already pointed out. I'll try
extra hard to work on that soon. Probably during the developers meeting
weekend.
