It is not like you to want to avoid removing code.

This "feature" seems mighty silly to me. It is up to the configurer to choose
a suitable compiler and set CXX if necessary. Maybe we could mention setting
CXX explicitly in INSTALL or something, but I don't see the point in some fragile
magic ...
