This has been a long term annoyance of mine too. So you have my 2p that it
is a real bug.

traditionally, lyx has had issues with cut and paste in certain scenarios
(I don't know why, I'm too new to the code)

there are currently many problems to do with highlighting (or drawing of highlighting)
