1.1.6 assumes that the font of the XLFD name
-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-adobe-fontspecific
is in the Adobe Symbol encoding. While 1.2 asssumes
-*-cmmi-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-adobe-fontspecific
-*-msam-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-adobe-fontspecific
-*-msbm-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-adobe-fontspecific
etc. are in some kind of TeX encodings.

However, the last two fields in XLFD (X logical font description)
"charset-encoding" predefine a keyword "adobe-fontspecific" to mean
any character set/encoding pair you want.

It is natural that there are fonts of such XLFD with incompatible
charcter sets/encodings.

Try
lyx -dbg font
on a machine with the symptom.
