\boldmath is available without any additional package, but 

is a very old command.
when using amsmath it's much more better to write
\mathversion{bold}
.... mathstuff ....

\mathversion{normal}


when you want to have a whole formula in bold.
The "standard" way for single characters in amsmath
is \mathbf{} or \boldsymbol{}. The last one needs
package amsbsy.
