I didn't check for multicolumn (but I don't understand where there could
be a problem in this case), but it is possible in LaTeX to have a fixed
width column with center , left or right alignement(see the "Quick &
dirty patch for tabular (i.e. wishes ;-) )" thread. (Note : I have made
some progess since I posted the patch, and now the needed \providecommand
is in the preamble as it should. But I didn't post it as Jürgen (Vigna)
told me to wait for 1.2 before submitting any patch).

The 2 issues I didn't investigate on (closely related to each other) are :
        - How to obtain a correct display on screen
        - How to maintain consistently the format of the column and the
"text layout" of the cell's content.

Anyway, tables handling is certainly one of the more complicated issue
in text processing, and the tabular layout is already far beyond what was
possible with the "old" table implementation. Thank's to all of you.

I am not sure to really understand the issues behingdthis thread, so I
apologize if I am off-topic. Please let me know directly (I am not
registered to the list, just checking the archive on a non regular basis).

Best Regards
        Alain
