\\ gives you a line break so
blah blah blah $x\\y$ blah
blah
will give you in the latex output
blah blah blah x
y blah blah
Displaying it in two rows in on screen, namely
blah blah blah x blah
y
blah
is quite different than the output you get, and it is confusing.
Therefore, it is better to treat \\ in inline formulae as an unrecognized
macro: The lyx display should be
blah blah blah x\y blah
blah
