Compiling "on disk" is not an option at all. I think we (in other words _you_) have to think again about memory usage. Now. We can't require the latest compiler on the latest hardware (but with automake 1.5 and not 1.6) just to compile LyX. If this means we can't use some nice feature or two, well, that's the price for having content users and developpers. If you move on on the path you've obviously chosen you'll be the only one working on LyX at some point of time. Is that what you want?
