Well the first line of my document is bold, and I inserted the ERT
there. I doubt that the ERT is bold, it's the first "character" in my
document.

I did. It worked the first time I tried it, then I got all those errors,
now it doesn't work, but \thispagestyle{empty} works.

Dunno. The only thing I can point to and say is wrong is that LyX is
able to lock it up =) But as for LaTeX, is it possible that I need some
more packages? Is \frontmatter a part of LaTeX or an add-on?
