Can you add a debug check  to print out like :

        lyxerr << QTextCodec::codecForLocale()->name())

How baffling !

What happens in KDE applications ? Are you sure your X is set up
appropriately ?

It seems to me that since we found the correct encoder, the value we
return must indeed represent the unicode we were given. But I don't know
why they differ.

Are you using Rh 8.0 yourself ?

I've set F11 to produce Cyrillic_a, so when I've finished compiling,
I'll see what I get !

(in console I get 'a' but with a weird black bar above it)
