In /tmp/lyx_tmpdirXXXXXXXXXXX/lyx_tmpbufY They are produced by legacy_lyxpreview2ppm.py which calls latex, dvips, gs and pnmcrop to generate them. It was this last, cropping, step that was going wrong.
