Firstly, where can I get the previous version of Lyx/Mac?

The problem: most characters in equations are wrongly mapped. \partial is the @ symbol, \phi is an accented capital A, etc... This makes equations and text involving symbols unreadable. When you print the latex is OK so the problem would appear to be only with the lyx display.

This is a problem we're working on. The workaround (as noted on <http://wiki.lyx.org/pmwiki.php/LyX>) is to copy files from LyX.app/Contents/Resources/Fonts into a MacOS X system font folder, such as ~/Library/Fonts (for the current user) or /Library/Fonts for all users.

Old versions of LyX/Mac can be found on the ftp server: <ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/>.
