No, it is not, and we all know. As Jürgen wrote: The goal is to produce
something similar to 1.3 with minimal effort for 1.4.0 and a real
sub/superscript inset for later.
Your solution with \text for sub/superscript looks good, but we have
nevertheless the problem that $\textrm{some stuff}$ needs to work, too.
