Bah.. I'd copied and pasted from a post on the gmane news group, which
munges e-mail addresses...
When I use
:pserver:anoncvs AT anoncvs.us.lyx.org:/var/cvs/lyx
it works (if I put a @ instead of AT in this post, gmane will interpret it
as an e-mail address and replace it with something going to gmane...)
I've fixed the instructions on this wiki page

including changing the references so that they now point to
