taking my 1st look at lyx-devel source ...

i know that recommendation is to build qt3 prereq w/ "-static"  
flag, but is it *required*?
i.e., CAN i build lyx against qt3-shared?

I don't see why not, though I've never tried (since portability of  
the resulting application has been important for us). Why not try it?
