The main problem is that the math panel doesn't work. Try to insert one of the mathbb symbols using the math panel and you get an empty inset instead of the symbol.
Typing \mathbb<space>R works for me as well. (It is indeed true that I first expected text>math conversion to work like it does with other symbols)
