The problem is not Qt in this case but the GPL. Assuming the installed

Right, I understand. So the risk is that one of the LyX developers could sue you when you release an installer that contains a commercial Qt.

I have a commercial licence.

That's great news.

However, I am reluctant here because there is a clearly better option
with using Qt4.

I totally agree that Qt4 is a better option and completely solves this issue. However, it will probably take a year or so before LyX 1.5 with Qt4 is released.

I'm currently working on a new installer for LyX/Win 1.4 that fixes all the current installation related issues. It would be great if there would also be a solution to provide an installer that works on Win98/Me and doesn't have all those annoying Q../Free bugs.

Woudn't it be an idea to mail all the developers (http://www.lyx.org/about/blanket-permission.php) and ask them whether they want to a make a special exception for linking with a commercial Qt?

Previously there has been such as exception for the non-GPL xforms library.
