For this we would need a real text-box-in-math inset and this does not

Why that? LyX currently show a blue edit box whenever you press C-m
inside a formula - fine. The only problem is that it parses its content
as \mbox{ } instead of $ $.

This is not possible, as Georg already explained.
Seems that I missed that info or email. Why isn't this impossible? All
we need is a math inset that isn't parsed but treated as verbatim.
