BO: Are you sure about this part? This is not as simple as a script,
we need pdfopen.exe, pdfclose.exe to track the process id of acrobat
reader and re-open it if necessary. I seriously doubt that this is
portable.

When I want to compare .pdf views, the 1mb free Foxit download
is available. Save the Reader file in say C:\previews and open
it with Foxit. Reader can be closed then and used to generate
another preview file and compared with Windows split the window.
Or one could use Ghostview instead of Foxit.
The workaround has always been easy. I've never been able to
get xpdf to install on Windows, besides it is clunky compared
to Reader or Foxit, unlike the superior xdvi gui even though
Yap (Windows dvi viewer) can now do color.
What is wrong with using the subject in conjunction to the
old fix (LyXWinTips) found on the LyX Wiki? Or maybe this
is the part I'm not following in the thread:
"Improved PDF viewing
This tweak makes the View PDF (pdflatex) command open the viewer window
automatically and avoids the error message that occurs if you invoke
View PDF (pdflatex) with the opened reader. Other viewer windows will
remain unaffected.
Assuming that you have the Acrobat or Acrobat Reader installed, do the
following:
Download pdftools and extract pdfopen.exe and pdfclose.exe into your
~\Lyx\bin directory. Create a text file PDFview.cmd containing
if not exist "%~dpn1-tmp%~x1" goto :go
pdfclose --file "%~dpn1-tmp%~x1"
del "%~dpn1-tmp%~x1"
:go
copy %1 "%~dpn1-tmp%~x1"
pdfopen --file "%~dpn1-tmp%~x1"
exit
in the same directory.
In Edit ? Preferences ? File Formats ? Viewer replace the viewer for PDF
(pdflatex) by PDFview, click Modify and Save.
If you select View ? PDF (pdflatex), this will show the current document
as a PDF. The error that you get if the Reader is already open will be
avoided, but *the file will be named slightly differently* to achieve
that result."

I haven't used this for sometime, but it seems just different
filenames are needed not different directories, because now one
can find .dvi, and .ps files in the same tmp_buf0. Anyway, I hope
this information contributes to progress. Perhaps PDFview.cmd,
> pdfopen.exe and pdfclose.exe could be included in the release.
mot juste,
