This, I believe, is why *all* of us decided not to do visual feedback
for end-of-sentence-periods. Writing an algorithm that would get it
right for every language and every type of period --- remember,
there's abbreviation periods, too --- would be a headache-and-a-half.
There were more pressing issues that needed work then, and there are
likely more pressing issues that need it now.
FYI: When I use LyX, I always type two spaces after an
end-of-sentence-period, even though I know nothing will happen, and I
can tell perfectly well where my sentence ends on my own, thank you
very much. I do this double-tap on the space bar to maintain a
habit. After all, I also use text editors, and sometimes have to use
other work processors, where I'll need to add that extra space.
