Source code in a book

I'd like to write a book in two columns. But sometimes there will be a
programming example that is supposed to span the columns. These
examples may be longer than one page.

I can't seem to find the solution for this. Neither floats, tables or 
minpages can do this.

Can this be done, and if so, how?
