Hey,
I'm running Lyx 1.0.0 on an old IBM PS/2 Model 56, with Slackware
kernel 2.0.35 modified for MCA, X, and KDE running. The machine has 16
MB of RAM and 50 megs of swap space, a 486SX processor, and an XGA-2
card with a 9524 monitor. My problem is essentially that Lyx
runs a little too slowly. For instance, when I'm typing with the times
font, when I start the line the typing is almost normal, but by the time I
get to the end of the line the cursor is lagging very far behind and
typing at the rate of about two characters a second. I changed to courier
and get the feeling that it is somewhat better. However, it too lags
considerably.
I heard that klyx is faster on machines with Qt installed.
However, despite the fact that every web site I've seen claims that klyx
and KDE are distributed in binary form for generic linux machines, I
have yet to find a single tar.gz file for klyx or any version of KDE
after Beta 4. RPM's are abundant, but rpm itself does not run on my
machine for some reason (it keeps quitting with a message that it can't
find "//var/lib/rpm", even when the directory exists). If the binary
tar.gz files for klyx do actually exist, could someone point me to them?
None of the ftp sites linked to from www.kde.org or anywhere else I've
seen have them, and I can't seem to find them using FTP search engines
either.
From what I've seen I like lyx very much and would like to use it
for some projects I'm working on. However I can't really use it for
large-scale typing with the cursor lagging so much. If there's any way to
speed up lyx, or to get klyx or some equivalent faster system, could
show me how to do it?
Thanks a lot
