Thast's excatly what I already do with xfig (I'm not vey keen on
the special flag or postfiltering trick). 
 - pros: useful in figures where you want visual feedback on placement
 of things
 - cons: a lot of file around, and update of all files when a change of
 class changes the doc fonts (this can be easily automated).
