Ha, that might be the reason.
I'm using 1.1.5fix2, and the umlauts just do not appear inside the math
environment, be it in math mode, text-in-math mode or the trick with the
verbatim \textrm{}.  And I tried both the real ü-key and the compose key
sequence that do work in 'standard' LyX.
