Is there a way to increase the preview quality? (The original files are
typically either *.svg or *.pdf.)

You can try to add flags to the converters in Tools > Preferences... > File Handling > Converters.

Under Windows rsvg-convert is used for "SVG -> PNG" conversion. For example, you can double the size by adding the --zoom 2 flag.

Under Windows the converters are in the bin directory in the LyX directory under programs. You can normally get all flags by running the converter with --help in that directory.
