You are on a Mac, right? This is a bug that has already been fixed for
the next version. It is caused by the shortcut insets used in the
beamer manual.

A quick workaround:
switch to utf8 encoding and add this to the preamble:
\DeclareUnicodeCharacter{2303}{\textasciicircum}
