This limitation is lifted in LuaTeX, so compiling with LuaTeX instead of pdfTeX is a possible solution. In principle, LuaTeX works fine with traditional TeX fonts and LuX supports this well. However, some 3rd party packages check for the TeX engine (pdftex/xetex/luatex) and assume Unicode-encoded "non-TeX fonts" are used with the latter two. This may lead to errors in complex documents.
