The advantage is that you can more easily navigate through the document. Each 
chapter of a book, say, can be a separate document. That's one way I've used 
them. But it can also be useful to keep a collection of math macros in a single 
document, and then include that (as a child) when you need your favorite 
macros. I've got a few documents like that, for different purposes.
I am clearly underutilizing LyX’s capabilities! I’m actually working on a book 
project and have been meaning to look more seriously into setting up a master 
document. Will do so now…
