Agreed! But in this case you change the defaults not per definition! The change happens
later in the document.

The only problem: You have to save the current counter value to suppress
changes
like. 14->12

current counter value?

If you did the chang after a matrix for 14 columns, then you have to save this value. For a following matrix with 12 columns, you shouldn't change the counter value
back to 12.  Only the greatest number of colums should saved.
