A side question: wouldn't BIBINPUTS = .;$home//;$TEXMF instead of the default BIBINPUTS = .;$TEXMF as the second pointer in the BIBINPUTS texmf.cnf line be more generic ? In the same line, I dond understand why the first one is not .// (for TEXINPUTS as well) to search down the current tree instead of requiring explicit directory spec.
