Hello Rich,
I have no idea how this works in xfig, but I have used tgif for a while
and it seems to me that it's much easier to learn. As far as I can see
these programs mainly do the same (draw little simple graphics). I think
the problem you have is very easily soluted in tgif. So if you are brand
new to Xfig, why not give it a try with tgif, too?
