  OK. I found the answer while taking a break from writing. It's all in the
spacing: inter-letter, inter-word and so on. There's a nice Web site that
illustrates the difference <http://www.aeonix.com/pagelay.htm> despite
completely missing the point about LyX and LaTeX. He knows only of TeX. I
wrote the author and suggested this was equivalent to comparing a high-level
programming language with assembly language for a particular processor.
We'll see how he responds.
