Do you mean chapter 5.7.3? It seems that this is a bug. The minibuffer commands don't work.
But if you use math-commands, it works. E.g. if you type '\displaystyle' in an inline formula, a purple-framed box appears in which you can insert the stuff, that should be displayed in the size 'displaystyle'.
