The latex help says:
A \parbox command is used for a parbox containing a small piece of text,
with nothing fancy inside. In particular, you shouldn't use any of the
paragraph-making environments inside a \parbox argument. For larger pieces

should use a minipage environment.
So, I understand that it is better to use minipage but from my practical
observation: it works even without it...
the main difference is that the minipage is an environment and
the parbox not. This has some conclusions, e.g. using of \verb
