When I upgraded gs last evening I also installed
ghostscript-fonts-std-8.11.tar.gz. These turn out to belong in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/URW. So I moved them there and ran mkfontdir.
Thought I was good to go.

All resolved: epstopdf works and the figure is no longer rotated 90 degrees. Jean-Pierre provided the clue.

  I made a subdirectory, /usr/local/share/ghostscript/fonts/ then made
symlinks to the URW fonts within that directory. Now epstopdf can find the
fonts it wants. Whew!

And public thanks to Jean-Pierre for his patience and help.
