I don't really know what you need, but such environments are still present in a book class, like memoir or komascript or otherwise _easy_ to create, like the one in my last book http://www.lob.de/pdf/voss_2_1.pdf (chapter 15) e.g. p146 and 153 All the images were created on the fly ... try it with M$ Word or Word Perfect ...
